I met Liz in 1990 around the
time her book with Pete Sanders, Knowing You, Knowing Me came out. I
was new in post and that book became my bible for finding my way in the
PSHE world. I was an adviser in Newham at the same time Liz was working
in Hackney so our paths crossed more and more. She was fantastically
modest about the book even though it was groundbreaking in our world -
teaching sex education in primary school was seen as radical then. The
book was full of fun and great ideas, I bought a copy for every school
in Newham!
Around the same time myself and Scilla Alvarado got together to write a book
on menstruation. Liz helped us with the early ideas and introduced us
to her publisher, LDA, who subsequently published the pack. Liz was
held in high esteem in the field of Health Education, she was generous
with her time and expertise, but, as you know, she didn't suffer fools,
and I liked her enormously for that.
Outside of work, Liz told me she had been to Cortijo Romero, a therapeutic
holiday centre in southern Spain and it was with her encouragement that I
went there myself and have continued to attend their workshops. I
always associate that beautiful location with Liz. One year she came
over with Jan Etoile to where I now live in Mallorca and we had lots of fun
sharing old memories and putting the world to rights.
